Bali Tolak Reklamasi

By suakatribe on Friday, February 14th, 2014

Greetings from snowy New York! This kind of weather makes us want to hop on a plane and head to a tropical island like Bali. But when it comes to Bali, we gotta get serious for a minute because there are nefarious dealings afoot that are putting both the environment and the economy at risk. The Benoa Bay reclamation project proposes to create new land in the bay for various tourism development projects such as luxury hotels and shopping, a golf course, a race track and a theme park. In the eyes of many Balinese, including those in the tourism industry, this kind of development is the last thing the island needs.

First, these changes to the coastline of Bali will have a negative impact on the environment, potentially leading to flooding of the sort that has paralyzed Jakarta this winter. The tourism market is saturated, with hotel rooms going empty and revenues down. Other, similar large projects have not been successful. And, as is so typical, this deal was done in back rooms behind closed doors without input from the people who will be directly affected.

You can find more information in both English and Bahasa Indonesia at and a petition opposing the project at Thanks for your support.
