Sunday was the first practice in the new studio - which could apparently be heard from several blocks away! Oops. At least it’s not really a residential neighborhood; here’s hoping that the people who DO live in the area like metal. The new space is actually bigger than Stonedeaf and the walls are still pretty bare except for a couple of pieces of soundproofing foam and the Suaka banner hanging triumphantly over the drum kit. Adding additional material to absorb sound should help matters immensely. The building itself is still under renovation, and we took advantage of the awesomely industrial setting to shoot some promo photos.

The new songs are really starting to come together. Now it’s time to focus and get ready for recording this fall. A couple of other interesting possibilities are on the horizon but nothing is confirmed yet, so check back soon for updates.

Peace.

The Tap Bar at the Knitting Factory has become one of my favorite spots for live music these days. The sound is good, the staff (including the bartender, ha ha) is professional, and the space is relaxed and intimate. It was the perfect place for last week’s Metal to the Pedal show, brought to you by Sapporo Beer and the always-reliable Karate Rice crew.

Object (http://www.myspace.com/object) started things off solidly; he plays guitar and sings, she plays drums, and even with no bass player it works really really well. Superfortress (http://www.myspace.com/superfortress) took the stage next - white leather jacket, matching headless guitar (looked like a Cort, but what do I know?), 80’s inspired keyboards (complete with aviator helmet), and vocals dripping honey like the guy from L’arc en Ciel.

We then took a break for DJ Kuma, who did not have pedals or play metal, but who seemed to be having a fabulous time nonetheless.

Sparky Quano (http://www.myspace.com/sparkyquano), on the other hand, brought enough pedals for everyone and then some. He is a truly out-of-this-world guitar player who creates an unbelievably huge and psychedelic sound without the assistance of a rhythm section or anyone else.

Suaka ended the evening on a high note, sounding better and more confident than I’ve heard them in awhile. I hope the momentum carries through into the studio later this year, in the meantime I can’t wait for the next show.

Props to everyone who came out on a Wednesday night, see you next time. peace.

I still remember when I saw Sepultura for the first time on the Chaos A.D. tour back in 1993. They were at the height of their fame. But following the release of Roots in 1996, the band broke up right after their sold-out shows in Brixton, London, U.K. I don’t even want to know who’s to blame for the bitter split.

Ever since Dimebag Darrell was shot, bands like Anthrax and many others have been inspired to reunite with their former bandmates. There’s no need to have a grudge because there’s always a way to solve the inevitable arguments that occur within a band.

Tonight’s show proved that the ongoing feud between 2 brothers named Max and Igor Cavalera is finally over.

United under the name Cavalera Conspiracy, with the help of Joe Duplantier (Gojira) and Marc Rizzo of Soulfly, they recorded the album called Inflikted - though apparently Johnny Chow is playing bass on the US tour while Duplantier records with Gojira.

Live, they delivered new tracks like “Sanctuary,” “Inflikted,” and “Ultra-Violent,” and then of course they took us back to ‘89 with classic tracks “Beneath the Remains” and “Inner Self,” along with some treats from from ’91’s Arise. I felt the venue was shaking while they played tracks from the Chaos A.D. and Roots albums. Their glory was recaptured that night.

Once again on this tour Cavalera Conspiracy brought along Incite (Max Cavalera’s stepson’s band) and several other great bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Bury Your Dead, and Throwdown. And Igor’s son made a special surprise appearance carrying on his dad’s skill on the drums on “Troops of Doom.”

It was such a great show it made me play better for my show July 23rd. Hope to hear more from the Cavalera brothers of metal.

The Cro-Mags may not have been the original New York hardcore band, but they are widely recognized as being the first to combine punk with metal and god knows what else to create a whole new sound that would prove to be highly influential. Founded by a couple of teenagers in the early 80s, they released their seminal debut The Age of Quarrel in 1986 and by the time I was going out to shows in New York City it had all already fallen apart and come back together many times over.

Hardcore being what it is, everyone who has ever been in that band has a story or ten to tell, but so far as I know only John Joseph has taken the time to write an actual book about the whole thing. It’s called Evolution of a Cro-Magnon (available online through punkhouse.org) and it almost sounds like a cliche: abused kid bounces between foster homes and the street, turns to drugs and crime and other vices, and eventually finds redemption. The funny thing about clichés, though, is that a lot of times they are based in some serious truth. Otherwise they’d just be anecdotes.

So far as I can tell, John Joseph was pretty much a miserable sonovabitch when he decided to ditch the Navy in favor of hooking up with the Bad Brains in DC. Not surprisingly, this was a life-changing experience. Though he eventually turned to Hari Krishna instead of Rastafarianism, life with the Bad Brains literally opened his mind and set him on the path to where he is today. Not dead, not in jail, but instead running triathelons, eating vegan, and still hardcore as all hell. You can see the effects of a lifetime of chaos in his face, and when he recalls a particularly choice hustle or other shenanigan he lights up like it was Xmas and everything he wanted was under the tree.

I unfortunately missed the opportunity to see him read from his book at a benefit recently, but I managed to get myself there in time for the midnight Cro-Mags show (which actually happened closer to 1 in the morning - not bad for a Thursday night). Now, no offense to the almighty Bad Brains and their transcendent final CBGB show, but I have never - EVER - seen a pit like that. Made the NHL look tame. And this wasn’t even the classic Cro-Mags lineup! John Joseph was on vocals of course, with a couple of the guys from Leeway and one of his buddies from Bloodclot. Doesn’t matter; they kicked more ass than any of the newer bands I’ve seen lately even though all the members are approaching what normal folks call “middle age.” It was a pleasure and an honor to be there; sorry the pictures aren’t better but hey, it speaks the night’s finest moments.

Peace.

This show we just did, such a reunion for Gun and James from Black Down. Having previously played together while back in long Island, at the time Gun was in the band called Akward Beeker, once again we would like to thank you James and Black Dawn for getting us the show.

The Brooklyn Lyceum is an interesting space though a bit challenging because it’s basically a big open roof ceilings, lots of hard surfaces for sound to bounce around on, and no actual stage. Probably ideal for performance.

First up was Kiyomi, a keyboard player and singer with an amazing voice, and her backup band. She sang several original songs including a Lullaby written for her nephews plus a Leonard Cohen cover. They also did an instrumental piece that featured some very nice guitar work.

Second was Aquila, two chicks (one on bass, one on drums) who were doing their second show of the day, having played earlier at the Punk Island extravaganza on Governor’s Island. Their music displayed a strong metal influence and they quite thoroughly rocked despite technical difficulties.

Next was Damsel, another all female band with a melodic groove.

Black Dawn played fourth, four seriously solid players with a grungy, hardcore-edged metal sound that I personally enjoyed quite a bit as did pretty much everyone in the house.

The showstopper was Cocaine. They’re a band! Really!! Classic 80’s style rock, they are fronted by a sexy blonde chick with a British accent, a problem with socialism, and a bag of mysterious white powder that somehow ended up all over the stage, leaving the crowd on their feet and begging for more.

It would have been a tough act for even the Rolling Stones to follow, but Suaka pulled it off. The guys took the opportunity to try out some new material as well as old favorites like “Vision of Tomorrow” and “Budaya.” This was only Daisuke’s second show with the band, but he is sounding good on the drums and bringing a little new flavor to the sound. Next show is July 23 at the Knitting Factory Old Office with Sparky Quano; hope to see you there.

The Lyceum gig was taped for Video City TV, which airs Sundays at 1:30am on channel 68 in the Bronx, Wednesdays at 12:30am on channels 35/68 in Brooklyn, and Saturdays at 3:30pm on channel 34 in Manhattan, or online at http://www.videocity.tv. Check it out for exclusive interviews with the bands and live clips from the show.

Thanks again to everyone who came out, see you next time. peace.

Dear old schooler :0)

I remember when i first got into Thrash Metal. Death Angel second LP Frolic Through the Park was one the album that got me into guitar playing ! I was sad to find out that they broke up in late 90’s when they got into accident while touring for their 3rd album Act 3.

Thanx to Chuck Billy (Testament) for putting together Thrash of the Titans Show back in 2001 which allowed band like Vio-lence, Death Angel, Sadus, Exodus, Heathen etc to re live the legacy of thrash metal (great show!!).

Now to the show. Tonight show is the end of In Thrash We Trust Tour run featuring God forbid. Due to some problem, Light the City and Soilent Green were replaced by Martryd & Arsis. Anyway, the show was really amazing. It brings me back to the Thrash era (what a nostalgic moment). This tour is Death Angel’s first North American tour in 18 years.

Delivering classic tracks like Evil Priest, Voracious Souls, Seemingly Endless Time, Disturbing the Peace along with new tracks from the new album Killing Seasons, Death Angel has shown new schooler how tight their musicianship is.

Andy Galeon skillful drumming, Rob Cavestany ripping guitar solo, Dennis Pepa funky bass sound, accompany by Ted Aguilar on rhythm guitar and energetic front man Mark Osegueda. They surely delivered the show. This has to be one of my memorable one, thank you guys for lifetime inspiration.

Summer is here again.

We have been working with our new drummer Daisuke. So far is working out good. Just letting new ideas flow.

However, due to increasing rent, Stonedeaf’s bosses Gun & Kiki decided to find a new studio. They found it somewhere in Bushwick Brooklyn. The building is used to be beer brewery factory that somehow the owner turned the place into a rehearsal space. According to the owner, soon he will build a venue which great for all the Brooklyn music community.

Meanwhile Kiki and Gun is building a new recording studio hopefully will be ready by September. Suaka is currently practicing in underground studio Astoria Queens (shared by Goro & Uzuhi). The upcoming event is June 21. Suaka will be playing in Lyceum Brooklyn New York ( thanx to Gun for getting the gig).

Details will follow soon. Cheers.

Almost forget, this is the eight stringer i always talking about. See you at the gigs.

Dear all,

I really had a blast at the C U La Tour concert, gotta be the most anticipated show this year since Al Jourgensen of Ministry announced that this would be his very last world tour. I told my good friend Kat, let’s go to see it …then i found out Meshuggah the special guest for this tour! I was like yeaaayy…!

The wait is finally over . let’s capture what’s been going on.

Tonight’s opener is hemlock, originally from Las Vegas. Their performance was really solid tonight, reminding me of System of a down or Mudvayne. I came up to the booth to purchase their latest cd No More Sorrow and talked to their bass player/singer Chad for a little while, he complimented my Death Angel shirt ;).

Next up: Meshuggah.

Some notes: I did not even realize that they were playing 8 string guitar ever since they released the Nothing LP in 2001. The guitar in particular was originally made by local (to them) Swedish guitar maker Nevborn, although previously they had used an Ibanez 7 string on the Chaosphere album. Later after releasing Catch 33 in 2005 (which i feel is their most abstract album with less of a human feel especially because Tomas Haake was not involved on the arrangement of the drums) they were not doing so well on the sales. But to be honest i still have huge respect for them.

Then they linked the deal with Ibanez and soon after that the 8 string ibanez was released. I finally got my hands on it in early 2008 which I will use on our upcoming Suaka EP.

Now the performance. Meshuggah really gave a sonic attack metal riff of a performance, blowing out the power on stage halfway through the first song! Complex syncopation on drums and yet monstrous guitars riffs by Fredrik Thordendal & Marten Hagstrom accompanied by new bass player Dick Lövgren and the growling vocals of Jens Kidman. The pit opened wider with songs from their most anticipated album Obzen. The band literally attacked the audience with songs like ”Bleed,” “Electric Red,” and “Pravus.” Then they played my favorite songs off their nothing album: ”Rational Gaze,” “Perpetual Black Second” …and their classic “Future Breed Machine.”

Their show tonight reminded me of Sepultura’s Chaos AD Tour, and Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power.

Finally. Ministry came on that night with power, starting off with a hypnotic long intro. Chain-link fences were set up in front of the stage creating an industrial and urban atmosphere… Damn. What a rocking moment! Video screens in the back of the stage were playing footage of global chaos, war and violence. Al had his trademark mic stand made of skulls and bones. This has to be their strongest formation yet with the legendary Tommy Victor (guitar), Sin Quirin (guitar), Tony Campo of possessed and Static X (bass), Rhys Fulber of Fear Factory (keyboards), and Aaron Rossi of Prong (drums).

They offered up songs from their latest album The Last Sucker and the Grammy-nominated Rio Grande Blood including “Last Sucker” and “Let’s Go” which Al co-wrote with Tommy Victor. The pit got even crazier when Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory joined the band for an encore, playing the classics like “Thieves,” “Burning Inside,” and “Just One Fix.” There were no “Stigmata” or “Supernaut”… but that’s okay.

They made up for it in other ways, including “N.W.O.” and “So What.” Finally they ended the show with a second encore of cover songs from the doors ”Road House Blues” and the Stones ”Under my Thumb”.

Adios amigos - thanx for such great show …

- Rully Roots Rochmat (and Kat) -

Dear friends,

Show last night was fun. Good to see familiar faces, once again we have to give new drummer Daisuke drops because he learnt our songs in 2 weeks and with 3 times rehearsal. Starting things off with music plays by DJ Mar Galo playing all kind of music from Indonesian to Western music. After that, Juna takes on the stage. Honestly i am impressed how well written their music is infusing pop and rock with Kenny’s soothing vocals. Kenny is known for helping Ras Muhammad recorded his early demo. Overall the crowd were really into them. The highlight was when Mar Galo joined Juna on one of their set.

Dream of Digital Generation debut performance that night was offering tracks from upcoming independent LP. They seem to be very confident. My good friend Onggo pulled his project together along with girl’s singer keyboardist. And the back up band makes their performance solid and leaves the crowds happy.
Wish you guys luck with your first LP.

So. We finally took the stage. Most of the people are happy to see us play again it has been a year and half since we performed in front of indo crowd!! We start things off with our intro goes straight to World on Your Shoulder. It makes the crowd get warmed up and moshpit broke out. Haven’t seen those pit in a while and soon after, Noda Kelam was played. This song was inspired by Indonesian ghetto kids roaming the street of major city of Indonesia (wish the goverment taking this matter seriously!).

Well, it’s time for us to bring back Indonesian beat by playing our anthem Budaya… It always give a chill when we play that song specially when the crowd react to the song, dance with them, and the sound of gendang blends with heavy ass riff. Now that’s the highlight of the show for us…

The next song Saksi Bisu is dedicated to our heroes who died in tragedy 98 Jakarta - Indonesia, along who died defending our country since the colonial time… Then we ended the set with soothing new song Awaiting and Vision of Tommorow when i started moshing with the crowds didn’t even realize when i fell down then got back into it :). We had really a good time playing and can’t wait to play again!

Special thanx to Mariati and Hayden at karaterice.com, Permias NYC, JC Kaelin and Kat Valdez for documentation.
